You want something that appeals to a creative sensibility you no longer possess, and at the same time, you want something that will last through the dramatic changes your child will undergo as they age from an adolescent to a teenager. The best way to compromise on these two differing themes—durability versus imaginative flexibility—is by buying furniture that can be painted, altered, and decorated, and is not so small that it will be outgrown in just a few years.

The two main types of children’s furniture are bedroom furnishings, such as beds, desks, dressers, and chairs; and play furnishings, such as playful rugs, outdoor play sets, train and puzzle tables, building blocks, and more.
